Avocado Smallholder Program

Kakuzi continues to work together with avocado farmers through sharing knowledge, experiences and development of avocado farming as well as market access. Kakuzi has also availed quality avocado seedlings at a subsidized price to the farmers. This is aimed at helping rural families to make the best possible use of the resources at their disposal for increased avocado production and income. The small holder program is a step towards attainment of sustainable development goal number one “End poverty in all its forms everywhere.”

Progress at Macadamia Smallholder Program

There has been good progress in macadamia smallholder program. Through our model of local partnership, the macadamia division added 7 smallholder lead farmers; this increases the number of lead farmers to 12 so far. These farmers are allocated to different Kakuzi macadamia managers who visit them from time to time for knowledge transfer. A total of 140 macadamia seedlings were planted, 20 seedlings for each farmer. Adopting this model, we work to set up farms of excellence where other farmers can learn from.

At the same time, a forth macadamia smallholder open day was held during the second quarter. This initiative brings surrounding community members together to learn on macadamia development. The theme of the initiative, “GROWING MACADAMIA TOGETHER” aims to build on efforts made since the inception of the project in 2017. A total of 204 farmers turned up for the event that was also well attended by the national government leadership and elected leaders from the community. A total of 500 macadamia and 500 avocado seedlings were sold to farmers at subsidized price.
